I was recently reading this article THE MATRIX by Anil Ananthaswamy in the weekly magazine NEWScientist. He had investigated about this this called TNT which is otherwise called as tunneling nanotubes. These are processes from the cell membranes that connects to other cells and act as tunnels between the cells. In the article, various researchers claim this membrane extension to be the one of the causes for the transfer of various proteins to other cells.The article even mentions the doubt about connections of the TNT with the prions. If thats the case then these cellular extension must be curbed so that the prions do not spread.
But there is also a mention about these TNT could be useful in treating the chemothreapy resistant cells( the treated cells can transfer the effects into the untreated cells and lessen the cancerous effects)
So, this TNT could be a promising future for those who want to curb the spread of infectious disease and TNT can also be the future for those who need to reach out to cells to cure them
